EV infrastructure: It’s a slow roll out
Local authorities are taking two and a half years to get Electric Vehicle (EV) charge points in the ground – meaning the nation is way behind the Government’s 2030 target of 300,000 charge points. So, what’s the hold-up and what can you do to accelerate this?
What’s holding things up?
At present, just 12% of the 300,000 charge points targeted by the Government have been installed. This slow pace is due to multiple factors:
Before works begin, local authorities need to have a charge point strategy in place and ideally recruit a dedicated lead officer for their EV infrastructure project. This recruitment and strategy process typically takes up to 9 months.
Despite this, according to our Local Authority Insight Report, 31% of local authorities have no formal EV infrastructure plan in place, and 44% don’t expect to complete one in the next three years.
Once the strategy is created and bought into, it can take 12 months for the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles to assess and communicate LEVI funding applications.
With funding secured, it takes around six months to identify the most appropriate sites for charge points, then a further three months for deployment – taking the total timescale to up to two and a half years.
